Nyngan’s newest street will be named “Warrigal Way” following a discussion and vote from Bogan Shire Councillors at the February meeting. Councillors were asked to put forward suggestions to name the street which links Oatley and Oxley streets through the centre of the council-developed subdivision near the Nyngan showground.

After discussion, the two most popular names were “Warrigal” and “Gunningbar”, with councillor Richard Bootle’s motion for the former being voted on by a majority of councillors.

Warrigal is a location to the east of Nyngan and once included a railway siding, and was also home to a meatworks and many of its employees.

The name is in keeping with the majority of other streets in Nyngan which have been named after parishes and geographical localities.

Bogan Shire Council general manager Derek Francis attached a copy of the Geographic Naming Board user manual to his council report to guide councillors in their decision making.

It ruled out naming the road after anyone who was still alive, or hadn’t been dead for more than one year.

This meant the suggestions of “McLaughlin Street” and “Buist Street” (both to recognise long term councillor and former mayor Elaine McLaughlin), “Donald Street” (after former mayor Ray Donald OAM); “John Street” (in recognition of former councillor John Elias) and “Quinn Street” (after jockey Rodney Quinn) could not be considered as all were still alive.

Councillors initially also suggested “Eldridge Street” (after the late Glad); Keighran Street (after the late Peter and Val); “Barrow Lane” (after the late Bruce); “Tyms Street” (after the former local doctor); and “Kourt Street” (after the late Con and Betty).

Other geographical names to be considered included Mulla, Marra, Mullengudgery, Buddabadah, and Honeybugle.

There was support for the street to be named “Duck Creek Drive” in recognition of both the locality and the nearby race meeting; “Expo Drive” after Nyngan Ag Expo; and “Pound Place” to reflect the land’s former use as a pound paddock.

Cr Emily Stanton pointed out the need for the name to be easily spelt and pronounced, saying “Nyngan” was already a challenge in that regard.

The names “Belah” and “Brolga” were submitted as being significant to the indigenous community.

Mr Francis said council would now submit “Warrigal Way” to the Geographic Naming Board for approval.
