During this year's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, or BCAM, professional bra fittings will be taking place in Nyngan.

Philippa Mitchell, owner and operator of The Fitting Studio, will be coming back to Nyngan to help fit women from all ages and walks of life into the perfect bra for them.

A correctly fitting bra can be lifesaving. You will be forgiven if your initial thoughts on a bra’s purpose is to just support a woman’s breasts, but the impacts on a bra that doesn’t fit your body could be affecting you in more ways than you might realise.

A proper, professionally fitted bra can help you with your posture, walking, breathing, lymphatic drainage under your arms, protect breast tissue, and can give confidence within yourself.

Philippa has been working with women and young girls of all ages in regional, rural, and remote areas for years.

Trained in bra fitting as well as being a mastectomy fitter, Philippa has helped hundreds of women find their perfect bra.

“I am passionate about women wearing the right size of bra and the right style of bra for their age, their body shape and for their lifestyle,” said Philippa.

“I want women to be comfortable, supported, and confident,” she said.

Philippa works closely with the McGrath Foundation, an organisation which works to help people with any type of cancer get connected to a free McGrath Cancer Care Nurse. Currently, there are two McGrath Cancer Care Nurses in Dubbo.

Phillipa advises that looking after your breast health should be an important part of your routine. It is recommended that you check your breast at least once a month, and get regular mammograms every two years.

Phillipa says that breasts are naturally lumpy, and they change all the time so it is crucial to get to know your breasts.

“It is so important that you check your breasts every month, and to normalise checking your breasts too,” Philippa said.

“Talk to your friends about it, make a thing of it, send out a text or call and ask on the first of each month have you checked your breasts?

“Get to know your breasts, go for your mammogram every two years, and if you notice something off - go to your doctor and get it checked by a professional,” she said.

For four years, The Fitting Studio has regularly visited Nyngan, servicing women from the community and surrounding towns such as Cobar, Warren, Gilgandra, Bourke, and more.

Philippa says that 94 per cent of women are wearing the wrong bra, and many don’t know what the right bra for them actually is.

“Women will come in who are a size 14 in their shirts, but should really be a size 16 in a bra band, but people don’t want to be a size 16,” Philippa said.

“But a t-shirt is more forgiving where a bra is not, so it is really important that women have the right size bra to support them.

“The right bra (size and style) will protect and support your breast tissue, when we are young our breasts are perky because they contain fibrous tissue,” she said.

Philippa also helps women who have gone through breast cancer, whether they are currently going through chemotherapy or have gone through either a lumpectomy or a mastectomy.

The Fitting Studio has a range of comfortable, supportive, and attractive mastectomy bras and breast prostheses.

“Most women who have gone through breast cancer will know what is available to them in terms of bras and prostheses,” said Philippa.

“But some people do fall through the cracks, and that’s where I can come in with some more information.

“It’s also important to note that if you have gone through a double mastectomy or lumpectomy, you can claim a breast prostheses back on medicare for up to $400 every two years,” she said.

Philippa offers a wide variety of bras including, mastectomy bras and breast prostheses, non-wired bras, underwired bras, t-shirt bras, soft cup bras, front fastening bras, sports bras, bralettes, and more.

She also sells a wide range of sizes from size eight to 32, and cup sizes from AA to K.

During the fitting process, privacy is of utmost importance to Philippa.

“I always say that I don’t want to see your breasts, I want to see you in a good bra,” Philippa said.

“During a fitting I will measure you over your bra, and stand behind you.

“While I am at Nyngan, I will be located at the back of The Junction, it is private and no one will be able to see you.

“Your privacy, comfort, and safety is incredibly important to me, and all information is kept confidential,” she said.

The Fitting Studio will be in Nyngan for two days in the coming weeks. For more information you can visit The Fitting Studio’s website and social media.
