Nyngan gymnasts excel at Tamworth event

They live two hours from their gym, but that hasn’t deterred two Nyngan gymnasts who have been achieving some great results on the competition circuit this winter.

On the weekend both Chelsy Fitzalan and Paityn Webster travelled to Tamworth to compete at the Country Capital Cup with their team mates from the Dubbo Ignite Gymnastics Club.

Both girls had a successful competition with Chelsy achieving a second place on the floor beam and her team finishing second overall in their level seven division.

Paityn achieved a sixth placing on the vault and her team finished seventh overall in their level four division.

More than 1000 gymnasts competed at the Country Capital Championships, and both Chelsy and Paityn’s results were remarkable given they don’t have close access to a gym.

Both girls travel to Dubbo at least once every week to the Ignite Gym, and then practise their skills at home. Chelsy, 15, has been competing with Ignite for the past seven years and currently trains in Dubbo on Friday night and Saturday morning training - around six hours a week, which is about half the time of her fellow gymnasts who live closer to the club.

Paityn, 10, is newer to the sport, but also travels to the Dubbo every Saturday morning. Chelsy has also recently competed in a Tamworth Winter Invitational competition where she was fifth on the floor beam and bars and sixth overall in level seven; and represented the Western area in the recent Combined High Schools competition at Rooty Hill in Sydney.

Her results were especially impressive given she has suffered debilitating injuries to her ankle, neck and shoulder over the past 12 months.

A new addition to her beam routine – a round off – proved successful in all three recent competitions and she is excited for the rest of the competitive season.
