Bogan Shire Council will not allow community members to permanently customise concrete plinths in the Nyngan Lawn Cemetery, following discussions at the March meeting. Councillors have resolved the only addition to the precast uniform concrete plinths in the lawn section can be a plaque.

The resolution follows two requests from the community to make alter plinths on individual graves.

One request was for the installation of a base slab and vase holder to a plinth in the older section of the lawn plots; and another was for the replacement of a concrete headstone in the newer section with one made from “granite cement”.

Director of infrastructure services, Grayden Curry circulated drawings of the proposed alterations in his report to council.

He also attached a copy of the Bogan Shire Council’s cemetery policy which was adopted in 2016, but which he said did not specify council’s intent for how the lawn section should appear.

Councillors agreed the intent for both the old and new sections of the lawn cemetery was to look “uniform”.

Councillor Karl Bright moved council not permit alterations/replacements of the existing concrete plinths, except to add a plaque.

The resolution was seconded by Cr Doug Menzies and adopted.

Meanwhile council is currently preparing a revision to its cemetery policy with respect to the look of the lawn section.
