Get ready for Trangie Junior Judging Day!

The school holidays are off to a good start this year, with the much-loved annual Trangie Junior Judging Day to be held at the Trangie Agricultural Research Station on the first Monday of the mid-year school break.

Registrations are currently being taken for this year’s highly anticipated program on July 7 at the state of the art agricultural facility features six sections: beef cattle, Merino sheep, meat sheep (Border Leicesters and Poll Dorsets), Merino fleeces, cotton, and grains.

Each competitor will participate in all judging sections within their particular age grouping, which includes Seniors (15 to 24 years), Juniors (10 to 15 years), and Sub-Juniors (under 10 years) who may have a parent to help them.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries has once again generously made its Trangie Agricultural Research Centre available for the popular annual event, which regularly attracts young competitors from Trangie, Warren, Narromine, Nyngan, Nevertire, Tottenham, Parkes, Dubbo, Gilgandra, Gulargambone and Orange districts, and sometimes beyond.

Coordinator Kath Donoghue says the full day out is a great experience for the participants, and some impressive prizes are on offer. Pre-registration before July 2 also brings the added benefit of a lower entry fee. “This year NSW Farmers will be donating cash prizes for the pointscore winners,” she said.

“Older competitors also have a chance of seeing their names engraved on silver trophies with a long history, many dating back to the 1940’s, with the names of Trangie district identities still visible as previous Junior Judging Champions, Kath explained.

“Over many years, the winners of the Senior section have gone on to win competitions at regional and then state level (at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show) after gaining valuable experience from the Trangie Judging Day,” she added.

“Many of the experienced overjudges for each section have been Judges and Stewards at Sydney and numerous local shows.”

Sub-Junior and Junior groups will be given a judging overview in each section to boost their knowledge before judging each class, Kath said.

This year, Sub-Juniors will participate in a learning session rather than the competition of the older age groups. The full day’s program starts early at the Cattle Section at the Trangie Agricultural Research Centre, and the entry fee includes a delicious barbecue lunch. “The Cattle Section has a perfect open grassy area with yards and plenty of room for the many competitors,” Kath said. “Don’t forget your winter woollies as it will be cold!” Kath cautioned.
