Elijah’s extraordinary experience representing Australia in China
Nyngan Pony Club member Elijah Bush has just returned home after an extraordinary experience representing Australia at the Suzhou International Equestrian Competition in China.

Elijah, 14, was one of only three young Australians selected to compete in the international showjumping event, alongside riders from Queensland and Tasmania.
Teams from New Zealand, South Africa, and China also took part, creating a celebration of skill, friendship, and culture.
The competition was held at the spectacular Saga Riding Centre near Suzhou, which was surrounded by bamboo forests and hot springs.
Elijah’s coach for the trip was Janet Hamblin, who is also from Nyngan and who has an association with both Nyngan and Warren Pony Clubs.
“Elijah competed in several showjumping events, from 60 centimetres to one metre, riding four different horses throughout the week and earning praise for his strong horsemanship and considered rounds,” Mrs Hamblin said. “His calm approach and adaptability stood out among the international field.” Elijah’s family watched the competition from their home in Nyngan, and his mother Angie Bush said Mrs Hamblin’s leadership and enthusiasm made the trip both successful and unforgettable, with plenty of laughter and fun along the way. “The cultural experiences were just as memorable as the competition.
“The riders toured Shanghai’s ancient water town and visited Romance Park, where they watched breathtaking live performances filled with music, acrobatics, and light,” she said.
“They also formed lasting friendships with their translators, who shared stories, jokes, and local insights throughout the week.”
Mrs Bush said a highlight for Elijah was being selected to deliver a speech on behalf of the Australian team during a visit to the New Zealand Consulate.
“He spoke about life and horses in Australia, capturing the spirit of the trip and representing his country with confidence and pride.”
The final days included sightseeing in Shanghai, a visit to Disneyland, a walk along the Bund, and a trip to the top of the Shanghai Tower, the third tallest building in the world.
“Elijah loved every moment of the experience, made lifelong friends, and discovered a real passion for travel. His time in China was an incredible achievement that has ignited a deep appreciation for the opportunities horses have brought into his life.
"He is extremely grateful to the people who have supported him along the way, especially Jennifer Wood, Jody Kilmartin, and Maddie Lawry, who have all had a significant influence on his riding journey,” Mrs Bush said.
