The Bogan Bulls remain undefeated following the first round of the Western Plains competition, with a solid 31-7 victory over Gular on Saturday, 20 June.

The muddy conditions at the Gulargambone oval suited the strong Bulls pack, which led 19-0 at half-time after dominating possession.

The game marked a return from injury of several key Nyngan players including forwards Manning Doughty and Tom Cleaver and winger Derrick Voku.

Coach Sarah Pearce congratulated the team on playing textbook wet weather rugby.

She said some players had returned for the game, and despite not having trained together, managed to integrate well into the side.

Veterans Harry Holmes, Doug Holmes and Gus Currans provided great support from the bench, as did some of the younger players including Oscar Holmes, Will Mudford and Liam Dedman.

Nyngan club captain Henry Weston congratulated Gulargambone on the game.

“You gave us a good test today, so keep going, boys. It'd be great to see you guys in finals,” he said.

“Nyngan had a really good day today. We played some of the best footy we've played, so something we can keep building on, but that was fantastic to see today.”

Gulargambone coach Mark Ferguson said the muddy conditions didn’t favour his side which has relied on its speedy backliners to get points.

“I really look forward to the last round game when we play Nyngan again. If we get a dry track, I think it'll be a pretty entertaining game of footy,” he said.

Nyngan’s best on ground was breakaway Aaron Duncan, who was awarded two points and players player.

Tyrone Chrystal was also outstanding all game, and was given the three points; and Brendan Nelson and Tom Cleaver were each awarded one point.

The Nyngan Tri Tag women were defeated in the earlier match by the top-ranking Gular team 40-5.

Nyngan coach Bubba Perry said the score line didn’t reflect the true game, with Gular scoring three runaway tries against the play.

“If you discount those intercept tries it was actually a more even contest. Gular are a very skilful team, but our girls are getting better every week and we certainly didn’t disgrace ourselves.”

“The first time we played Gular this season we lost 64-0 so our girls are definitely improving. We’ve got a lot of new girls and they’re still learning. They show up every week and give it their all.”

The three points and player’s player were awarded to try scorer Jemma Perko, two points to Abbi Parry, and one point was awarded to Opal Trumper and Lily Burton.

Both Bulls teams travel to Coonamble next Saturday (June 27).
